What was the first movie you ever saw?
The Addams Family. It started a lifelong crush on Wednesday Addams and Christina Ricci. I like an outsider. I used to go [to the cinema] as a treat with my mum and brother – we’d have pizza – and we’d discuss the film in the car on the way home.

What was the movie that inspired you to go into movies?
Hal Hartley’s Trust. It was at university in Oxford, and there was this amazing DVD store. We’d rent things all the time, thinking we were very cool watching Tarkovsky. Trust had humour and melancholy. I like the fusion of those.

What was the last movie you saw that reminded you of your childhood?
The Witches. That terrified me. We had a neighbour who always wore gloves and my brother and I were convinced she was a witch for ages.

What was the last movie that made you cry with laughter?
The first 20 minutes of This Is The End were so funny. I knew nothing about it going in and just loved it.

What was the last movie that made you fight back the tears?
I sobbed through Blue Is The Warmest Colour. Fascinating direction and impeccable performances. You were inside and outside the story at the same time. If people say movies are dead, make them watch that.

What was the last movie that you watched from behind the sofa?
I don’t like scary films. I watched Psycho for the first time recently, alone in the house at night. That was a mistake. I had to call my friend to come over.

What was the last movie that made the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end?
Splendor In The Grass. The performances in that make me tingle. I encourage everyone to see it.

What was the last movie you watched that you wish you’d appeared in?
The Royal Tenenbaums. Ralph Fiennes [her Invisible Woman co-star] is in Grand Budapest Hotel and I just badgered him for Wes Anderson stories constantly.

What was the last movie that inspired your fashion sense?
I watched Welcome To The Dollhouse and really wanted an ’80s shellsuit. Don’t have one yet.

What was the last movie that taught you a life skill?
I don’t know if it’s a life skill, but Room With A View made me think I must go to Florence. Is traveling a life skill?

What was the last movie you couldn’t stop thinking about?
Clueless. I watch it all the time. I know every line. If I’m watching it and someone interrupts I have to pause it. You can’t miss a moment.

What was the last movie that surprised you?
I’m always surprised by the brilliant construction of Annie Hall. I’ve seen it countless times, but there’s always something new. It’s always new.

What will be the next movie you see?
The Wolf Of Wall Street. Because it’s Scorsese, obviously, and because I’ve just worked with Jonah Hill (on True Story) and I love his choices.

What was the last movie that made you want to download the music?
Drive. Cliff Martinez is a genius. I downloaded it after watching Drive in LA and drove around for hours feeling amazing.
